Q. What is Pedorthics?

A. " Pedorthics is the design, manufacture, modification, and fit of footwear and related devices to alleviate foot problems caused by disease, overuse, or injury."

Q. What is a Pedorthist?

A. A Pedorthist is a specialist who uses footwear and related devices to accommodate foot problems, prevent further injury, and, if possible, help repair the damage. Under a physician's prescription Pedorthist uses therapeutic footwear to help ease or eliminate specific foot problems. Whether a foot condition is temporary or permanent, shoes and footwear devices can be part of the treatment plan.

Q. What are Orthotics?

A. An orthotic is a key footwear device. These look similar to the insoles you can buy at many stores, but an orthotic is very different. Working from a doctor's prescription, a pedorthist carefully creates an orthotic specially shaped to your foot. Properly made, an orthotic will help relieve pressure, redistribute weight, accommodate deformities, prevent injuries, and prevent the worsening of damage to the foot.

Q. What is a diabetic shoe?

A. A diabetic shoe, sometimes referred to as an extra depth or therapeutic shoe, is one that meets specific Medicare guidelines to be considered reimbursable under the Therapeutic Shoe Bill (TSB) by Medicare. The primary goal of therapeutic footwear is to prevent complications, such as: strain, ulcers, calluses, or even amputations for high-risk patients, such as those with diabetes. In addition to meeting strict guidelines, diabetic shoes must be prescribed by a Physician and fit by a qualified individual, such as a Certified Pedorthist (C. Ped). The shoes must also be equipped with an orthotic, which also is required to meet Medicare guidelines. Together, the diabetic shoes and customized insoles work as a preventative system to help diabetics avoid foot injuries and improve mobility. Many health care providers recognize the benefits of pedorthic care of the diabetic foot and because it is conservative care, it can be very cost-effective.
